Episode nine of Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! dealt with romance in such a way that it was poking fun at itself the entire time. Both Rikka and Yuuta have a problem with acting out their shounen anime fantasies. So what does Nibutani do to fix this problem for Rikka? The obvious solution is to have her act out shoujo manga.
Everybody lives in their own little fantasy world. Rikka and Yuuta want to be action heroes. Nibutani wants to be the cliche popular girl. Maokoto wants to be a rock star. In the end, there really isn’t too much of a difference between the four of them. I just found it hilarious that they would go this far to point it out. They had been hinting at it from the very beginning, but at this point they were essentially jamming it in our faces.
I really did enjoy the direction this anime decided to take on this topic. They could have gone with the overdone “dreams are important” theme, but instead they went with something I never saw coming. For that, this anime gets a few bonus points in my book. I’m glad I didn’t overlook it.
